Alexander Michael Chase was born January 8th 1984 in Los Angeles, California. He was the first and only child born to David, a high school Math teacher, and Abigail, a drama and English teacher. David and Abigail had met during their sophomore year of college. They married not too long after graduation, and, before they had been married even 2 years, Alex was well on his way into entering their little world. Yet, even after the birth of their son, their world wasn't perfect. True, they had a beautiful, healthy, bouncing baby boy to take care of, but it took a toll on their marriage itself. David had always been a bit uptight and straight laced, a polar opposite to the outgoing and free-spirited Abigail. While they both loved their son, they just, well, fell out of love with each other after a while. The couple chose to divorce when Alex was barely 3 years old. While he doesn't remember his parents ever being married, Alex was always surrounded by an abundance of love and support from both of his parents. This is something he has always been rather thankful for.
Alex's true colors and personality began to shine not too long after he had entered elementary school. Even at such an early age, it was obvious to his parents, his teachers, and, yes, even his fellow students that he was just a little different. Unlike some kids, though, he didn't try to hide the fact that he was unique. Instead, he was the type that actually flaunted it. He didn't care that he was different from the other little boys on the playground. He never saw a reason to be concerned about his uniqueness.
His uniqueness became even more obvious when he developed an interest in figure skating. Yes, figure skating. His interest began whenever he was watching the 1994 winter Olympics with his mother. Seeing the absolute joy that the skaters had while performing inspired him. He wanted to experience that kind of joy too. Though he started skating at 10, which is considered a little late, Alex progressed rapidly through his amateur skating lessons. It was obvious to everyone that he was serious about this - this was his passion.
Juggling school and skating was a challenge, but Alex was able to handle it all. He graduated high school in the spring of 2003. Though his parents wanted him to go to college, he felt that it wasn't really his "thing". Besides, by now, he was already getting attention from coaches in various countries due to his wins in the world junior championships and the US figure skating championships. Everything was falling completely into place for him.
Moving forward to today, however, the life that Alex had envisioned for himself as a young skater at the tender age of 10 hasn't quite come to fruition. True, he is known all over the world for his beautiful skating (and also for his flamboyancy), but he has yet to savor the accomplishment that all athletes dream of - an Olympic gold medal. He has been very close to standing on that podium, placing 5th at the 2006 Olympics and 6th at the 2010 Games that took place earlier this year. However, he hasn't quite had his "moment in the sun". Yet, that doesn't seem to really be a concern to him. Currently, he pursuing other ventures, hoping to branch out into other forms of media in order to express himself. |
